Discuss your thoughts on today's activities.
This course is an integrated reading and writing course that prepares students for further English courses and further study at the University.
Today's class activity consist of writing an essay that was required for every English student at UOG. The essay allowed me to understand the many types of genres out there. It also told me that plugging in content in a type of genre does not make me a master at writing. I must use my knowledge to plug in appropriate content in order to receive a desirable result. I was really confused about it all at first and now I understand it to some degree. The important part is that I left the class with more knowledge than when I had come in at the beginning of the class. So today was a successful class session.
ReplyDeleteHopefully we all came to a proper understanding as we will require these skills to progress with our class
DeleteToday's activity was quite challenging yet a lot of fun. it was great amazing to see how genre actually relates to our daily lives because that was something I never would have thought about. Also, I was randomly selected for an assessment which I think is pretty exciting as well. Learning how to relate genre to a certain piece of writing we once did in our life was pretty interesting. Class session today was just AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteI also would have never known that we use genre in our everyday life.
DeleteToday's activity was pretty interesting and fun. The essay taught me so many things about different genres that I can include in the essay. It really puzzled me at first, but at least I understood how it all works. I like how I the genre was related to a certain situation in my life. Class session today was pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteI had to read the excerpt two times because it also left me confused, but I was quickly able to understand.
DeleteReading multiple times is natural. Reading stuff like that is not like a novel. Rereading allows you to narrow down the bare main ideas to be able to summarize effectively.
DeleteThere's so much genres that we can incorporate in our writing!
DeleteI think rather than rereading doing a quick skim first to get the general idea of the essay then reading with the focus of the essay in mind is a great way to get to the main focus and general idea of an essay.
DeleteToday's practice exam left me panicking. I'm really not good at writing an essay with a time limit, plus I came late so I had less time to write what I want. But with the constant timed exams, the class is able to prepare for the post test and get a grip of what the test will be like. The topic for this exam was about utilizing different genres in our everyday activities without even realizing it. It was extremely relatable since as students, we need to know how to write appropriately. I hope we can continue with the exams since it has been very helpful. Overall a good class session (:
ReplyDeleteI'm also bad at writing timed essays so hopefully they'll help us write future essays.
DeleteGenres in writing have always been something we have been knowledgeable of for most of our lives. In college writing however, genres become more meticulous depending on the class. You have to learn to be more mindful in how your writing will sound like.
DeleteSame, I was also panicking because I knew that I wasn't going to finish my essay. I really learned something about this activity and I hope to do better next time.
DeleteI was worried at the beginning as well. I felt like I wasn't going to get anywhere. But i think we should just relax and just do a little research on what we are writing about, and then we should be fine.
DeleteAs previously mentioned what we grow up with and learn as acceptable just doesn't cut it when it comes to college writing as much as we would like to enjoy writing essays it comes down to a rather meticulous experience of set rubrics to structure upon.
DeleteToday's activities were quite different today. It was nice to be out of the classroom and in the lab for a bit. The writing assignment today was actually very interesting. I knew there were different types of genres of writing but I never looked into the differences until today. The excerpt of "Navigating Genres" by Ms. Kerry made me realize the difference between texting my peers and an email or job interview. All in all, I liked today's class being in the lab.
ReplyDeleteThe excerpt also helped me understand different genres.
DeleteI agree. Even though the activity was challenging for me, it was also very interesting.
DeleteIt was nice to be in a different setting for a while. Today was interesting indeed!
DeleteI understood the concept, but this is the first time i have heard the word genre used in this context. I always thought genres fit with types of novels.
DeleteToday's activity was challenging for me because it took me a while to understand what I was supposed to do. Timed essays pressure me and I am not good at writing under pressure. Like mentioned in another blog entry, I believe timed essays will help me overcome my struggle to write in a given amount of time. Overall, I thought today's activity was helpful and beneficial.
ReplyDeleteIt takes extensive practice to get excel in writing, especially college writing.
DeleteI agree, I'm also not good at writing under pressure. I tend to panic and my brain also gets blocked. I also hope that timed essay exercises will help me to be a better writer.
DeleteThe activity was a bit challenging. I found it hard to write for Part 2 because I thought the question is quite vague. I wasn't really sure what to write that would satisfy two pages. I felt that the essay I wrote was all over the place.
ReplyDeleteSame, I also found Part 2 hard. I was not sure if my writing was meeting the topic. I'm just hoping to do better next time.
DeleteSelf Reflection
ReplyDeleteI must admit that it has been quite a fruitful experience here in this class. I have always come to class to learn without missing a day. However, I can be slow to remember to do these blog entries because of other works to be done, a job to do, or simply being tired and lazy after a whole day on campus. I also tend to put the MyReadingLab modules in the side, which is not good to bottle up towards the end of the semester.
I believe I was ready to partake in discussion and readings. I must also admit that there are the occasional times in our morning class when I just feel tired due to lack of sleep. I also must admit that there are times when the class feels like its dragging which tends to bring me to a dream state. Regardless, I try my best to keep up and be in sync with the class.
I know that I'm not the perfect student, but I can honestly that I am genuinely learning. Although have come from Father Duenas and I have been used to extensive writing, this class allows me to have some fine tuning in my writing before I can start real, serious college writing.
As for a grade expectancy, Probably around the C range if I don't get to full gear with my online assignments.
DeleteYes Niel i can definitely vouch for the level of your forgetfulness haha but don't worry no individual is perfect just keep working at it and you'll get there
DeleteToday's activity was an essay writing that was required for all UOG students. The topic of the writing was the different kind of genres in writing. We had to write a summary and write a two page paper about the topic or if my concept was right. In today's activity, I found it very challenging. I was not sure if I was writing the right thing. I didn't really understand what I was suppose to do till the time was almost over. I was already panicking as the time went by. I don't think I got to write a good essay this time. I hope that I will do better on the next writing assignment.
ReplyDeleteToday's activity was a goo experience. Writing an essay in a matter of a certain time. I actually enjoyed doing this activity, however in the beginning i almost had a writer's block. I think when it comes to writing my essays, i just need further research on the certain topic and then i'll start to have a good train of thought on what i should be writing down. I also learned that genre really does play a big role on the classification of what we read or write. It's nice to actually get more information about genre.

DeleteLooking upon Wednesday's activities it seems like a extremely well placed experience and it allows us to get more information as a standpoint for how we are when it comes to the organization of our papers and the consistency of flow in which we are able to follow with the paper. It also seems that having a in class essay will help us develop our skills required for our final exam. Overall a great class and continuing to seek improvements :)
ReplyDeleteReviewing Wednesday's activities, we are asked to write an essay and a summary about genre. I know there are many genres in writing. For example, we should not use unnormal language in an email that we want to send to an instructor. I know the rubric of writing, so I can grade for my essay, which can help me develop my writing and reviewing skills. Overall a meaningful class and continuing our improvements.
