Reflection – Sept. 8 – Sec. 7 - Descriptive Essay

A descriptive essay is type of essay that allows you do describe in great detail what you want to convey. This can be an event or an idea this gene of essay provides the reader with specific details that allow one to picture it for themselves. Of the list of topics provided I would have to choose a lighting storm. When I was young living in the northeast kingdom of Vermont we had epic thunder and lighting storms. I remember my older sister Crystal and I watching from the back porch listening and counting to see if the storm was moving closer or farther away from us. The most memorable moment was when lighting struck a huge tree that was across the road from our house it caught fire and spread to this giant abandoned red barn from the late 1800’s. The whole town came to see it burn down, my only thought was I no longer could play hide and seek in its rafters.
ReplyDeleteIt's so scientific to count in order to know if the storm was moving closer or farther. I still sometimes count to see how far the lightning struck from a place where I am. I feel sorry to hear about the tree.

Deleteto me, lightning and thunder are such beautiful things to witness. one time when i stayed on South Fin. A military housing area here on Guam, a tree 10ft behind our house was struck by lightning.

DeleteA descriptive essay is an essay when describing something similar like how you would describe. It is like how the senses you would use on a certain thing or event, but you have to make sure you are being clear to the reader. The topic I choose is sports at school, for I played my last two years in high school basketball at St. Paul Christian School. In my senior year, I was believed to be the junior varsity's team captain, for I was the only senior in the j.v. team. We did win our last j.v. game, but only having at least 3 wins total. The varsity's final game was a home game (senior night) against St. John the next day, and my coach gave me an opportunity to join them. At that night, we had a good start, but the changes did not make things good for us. Due to the mistakes made, my coach decided not to put in his good players through out the whole game. He only put in the players who were making the mistakes. At the sound of the buzzer, St. John had won the game. We all walked to a classroom for coach to discuss what went wrong, the opportunities, the support, and the difference between playing good and playing smart. It was all along the opportunity I wanted instead of playing. That, I did not know all the varsity's game plan.
ReplyDeleteNow, I regret that I didn't play any sports in high school. Studying English didn't give me enough time to play a sport. I hope I'm going to have time to play a sport in college.
DeleteI also played a sport in high school, hockey. Hockey is a very popular sport in the northern states my position was right wing. I now regret that I did not follow it throughout all of high school.

DeleteLucky for you! I like basketball, but never played in high school. Sports was a big part of it though. I'm glad I got to play other sports throughout my four years.

ReplyDeleteA descriptive essay is an essay that explains about something such as a person, a real experience, an object, and etc. A topic for a descriptive essay can be anything. It can be written about a historical person, my dad, emotions, or an object. I would select ‘Your friend’ from the topics because I have so many things to write about it. Friends are really important for me. They are a part of my life. I can have fun when I am with them. I am always looking ford to hanging out with them. They are my big help too. They help me a lot when I am struggling with English. I really appreciate their help. I want to be an important friend for them too. By the way, it is really hard to make new friends at college.
ReplyDeleteIt was my first online session today. I didn’t know what to do for the online session at first but I kind of figured it out later. I read about “The Writing Process: Stage Two Writing the Controlling Idea/Organizing and Developing Support” and learned so many things. There were more exercises in Stage Two than Stage one. I am not sure if I did right on those exercises. By the way, there are three tools that can help me organize my essay: listing, clustering, and outlining. I liked listing most. It is really simple and easier for me to understand. I would like to use listing when I write an essay.
I was a little confused about how today’s online class was suppose to go as well. Friends are always good to have and I have also found it is very hard to make new friends especially since I am new to this area.
DeleteFriends are also important to me and I always look forward to hanging out with them. They are like my second family. Guam was known for the people and their hospitality, but over time, I think maybe things have changed. That's what I think, but if people aren't nice, who needs them anyway.
DeleteFriends are those who occasinally help you, whether from out of the blue or if expected. But some times they'll be hiding underneath such as the titles of book, and it is upon a reader to open and read them to know the book better.

although i keep to myself from others. i like to make a new friend. growing up friends were all i had to rely on. a friend, i now call brother, and his family took me in, and has helped me change my life for a more positive direction.

DeleteA descriptive essay is a type of essay that is written to describe. It could be a description about anything – a person, an object, or even an experience. The words and techniques used should allow the reader to clearly visualize what is being described.
ReplyDeleteAmong the topics listed, the one I chose was food. The reason being is because I love food, as well as everything that comes with it. For instance, some of my fondest childhood memories involve food, lots and lots of it. Family gatherings were always my favorite. I would go over to my grandmother’s house and see all of my uncles barbequing over the grill, the aroma of the meat would be so strong by then. All of the aunties would be in the kitchen; some cleaning, some preparing the dishes, and some yelling at the kids. The kids are all scattered, either running around or talking. When the food was finally prepared on the long table out on the porch, everyone came together. The food never failed to satisfied. It was a mixture of Chamorro and Filipino food; from red rice and latiya, to sinigang and buko pandan. The plates were always filled up that it would be too heavy to eat without a table. Although we would all eat a lot, there still managed to be leftovers. Of course, just like every other family gathering or party on Guam, it would not be over until all the food were all balutaned in the white paper plates and foil.
I like your definition of a descriptive essay. I love food too. I would have chosen food from the topics if there haven't been your friend. I miss Japanese food that I used to eat when I was in Japan.
DeleteI also went on moodle and was kind of confused with the whole online class session. However, I think I got it. I read about the second stage of the writing process and learned mainly about the controlling idea. I learned how to write a proper controlling idea as a topic sentence/thesis, as well as how to organize the supporting information. Among the techniques to help organize support, the one I would most likely use often would be outlining. Not only could I be able to organize the supporting information, but I could also analyze the whole essay.
DeleteHow you describe these family get together I want to grab a plate and join in. You have a wonderful family that is able to come together and help with the cleaning and cooking and just get along long enough to eat a meal together.
DeleteI love food too. I think being half Chamorro and half Filipino, you have the best of both worlds. At parties, you would always catch me going back to the table for more. Of course, I would have little breaks in between.

DeleteA descriptive essay is an essay to describe a person, place, experience, situation or emotion. It provides the readers with great detail also using the five senses. From the many topics to choose from, I chose learning a new instrument. Learning a new instrument can be very frustrating and confusing. The first time I tried playing the guitar, I was so bad. I didn’t know how to play any chords or strum the guitar correctly. I really wanted to play the instrument, so I borrowed my brother’s guitar, searched up videos on YouTube, and practically kept trying until I got some chords down. Then the more I practiced, the more I watched videos on YouTube, the better I got in playing guitar. Now I play every day and continue to learn new songs. Everything in life is hard, but if you really want to accomplish something, it wouldn’t be as bad as it seems.
ReplyDeleteI agree that learning how to play a new instrument can be frustrating and confusing. I tried to learn how to play a guitar before but I quit soon. It was too hard for me and frustrating. I have realized that I'm not that kind of person who can play instruments since the moment I tried to play a guitar.

DeleteA descriptive essay is an essay written to describe a person, place, experience, situation, or an object. In this type of essay you can use you five senses in it. How it looks, tastes, feels emotionally or physically, smells, and sounds. A descriptive topic I chose from the list is a beautiful sunset/sunrise. The sky always makes me feel a certain type of way. I love the sky and one day I wish I could paint a picture of it. Since I live on the west side of Guam, I watch the sun set. Guam’s sunsets can be so mesmerizing. The sky has a range of radiant colors such as oranges, reds, pinks, and purples and it is overwhelmingly pretty. I have watched the sun go down because they say you can see a ray of green light flash along the surface of the water and I did see it. It made me happy. The sunset makes me feel tranquil and at ease.

Deleteon some occasions i take my bike to paseo. walk out to the end of the rocks, sit down and enjoy the sunset and the peacefulness of the ocean. places like that really clear my mind.

ReplyDeleteDescriptive essays are, once understood, easily grasped and utilized. The physical senses of the reader are made active to the imaginations of what is worded. I'm not sure wheree the list if topics were at, but if they were on today's moodle session then I apologoze for not being able to attend it. Problems with my password halted my attempts at logging on today.
A Descriptive Essay is an essay that describes. Descriptive essays can describe a lot of things; it can describe a person, place, object, or even an event. This essay doesn’t just give you the surface details, it gives you very specific details about the topic you are writing about. The author tells you all his emotions, all the sounds he's hearing, and very little thing he sees. This essay makes the reader feel like he’s actually there experiencing the moment. Out of the topics that were listed, I decided to write about a sad day in my life. I picked this topic because this day just happened a couple months ago and I could still remember every detail about that day. I think this would be a good topic for me because it will have a lot of detail and it would kind of be a way to release some of the emotions I still have bottled up from this day.

DeleteA descriptive essay is an essay in which you can express your thoughts and your feelings. An essay that allows you to put so much detail that the reader will have the same idea and can visualize what you are trying to point out with your essay. Descriptive, meaning to describe or describing is what you as the writer is trying to do. The main purpose of a descriptive essay is to allow your mind to work and to figure out what that person is trying to write about. If I were to write a descriptive I would choose to write about my hometown. I would write about where I am from because I love where I am from and I’m sure that each and every person can say that they love where they are from. I love where I am from and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We live on the beautiful island of Guam there are beaches, nice people, beautiful girls, and lovely views what is not to love?

DeleteI agree with Elisha, everyone seems to be sick of Guam but once they leave they seem to appreciate it more. Maybe with your essay people will be inspired to love and be proud of where they are from.
DeleteA Descriptive essay is one of my favorite kinds of essays to write. Yes, i actually like writing essays or writing in general but a descriptive essay is an essay to better explain the writer's subject that well they're describing. A descriptive essay is very useful to people who may not like reading alot because you can view key points and it makes it easier. For me as a reader i dont like to read but descriptive essays are very straight forward and gives you alot of ways of viewing what the writer is talking about. It also has five senses that you are able to comprehend when reading a descriptive essay. Among the topics given to me i will choose sports in highschool. See i was born here on Guam till i was about 8 then moved to Oceanside Cali. lived there for a year and moved to Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. lived there for 8 years and pretty much grew up there. I played literally every sport there is a high school has basketball, football, soccer, track, swimming, i did it all. i moved back to California and stayed in Orange County for 4 years after that. I love sports. Football and basketball more than any. I love to keep fit and stay active. If you ever just wanna play ball or something we should get a game going im always down!

ReplyDeleteI would choose A sad day in life from the topics. The reason why I chose this was this topic is the most easiest one to write about for me. A sad day in my life was when I moved to Guam from Japan. Suddenly, my father decided to leave Japan for my future. My father wanted me to learn English. The decision was really sad for me because my friends and me already decided to go to the same high school together. We were thinking about happy high school lives but our imaginations never happened in the real life.

DeleteA descriptive essay is describing and explaining something in a very detailed manner. When writing a descriptive essay it is critical or of great importance that the reader has a thorough understanding of the topic you are writing about. The topic I intend to write about is high school sports and how to prepare yourself for physically. It all started in middle school. I enjoyed playing back yard football with my friends against other kids in my town. Going into seventh (7th) grade, sports were offered for the school so I tried out for the team. I began going to practices and noticed I was running short of breath. I basically had to suck it up throughout the season. I knew if I wanted to major improvements by next football season I would have to work hard during summer. Every year after that, I always made sure I wasn’t going into any sport without prepping my body for what will come.

ReplyDeleteA way to describe a descriptive essay is by simply expressing what you have seen, touched, tasted, felt on an emotional level, or even craved the sensation for. A descriptive essay can help you could talk about the places you have seen, like for vacation. Objects you have touched like monuments and statues. Also by the people who have touched you on an emotional level. But it has to be made a clear understanding to the reader. For my topic, I would like to talk about anger. On many various occasions anger was displayed at home and in public. While I was child growing up my parents weren’t together but they both displayed major anger problems that I later developed from them. Whenever my father was furious he could never keep still, as I strongly wished he could. Everyone and everything that was in his arms reach was either beat up, launched, or destroyed. After he was satisfied with his very own destruction he would storm out the door, take his Harley, and late at night. While in my room I could only but worry about whether he would come back home or if I would wake up hurting. My mother displayed a different, less destructive, but just as terrifying fit of rage. Whoever she would be with at the time. I would always hear threats going back and forth. I remember confining myself in my own room listening to what I had hoped were only empty threats coming from that master bed room. But alas, hope can only make you withstand so much. As of today, I’m reminded of my past by those memories, my scars, and by the negative habits I have picked up from them.

DeleteDescriptive essays are works which the author is portraying their perspective on an event, object or emotion. It is described with colorful language and vivid details, which includes the use of the five senses. This type of essay helps the author express to their readers the appreciation they have for the subject they are writing about, the intent of the piece is to get the audience to envision themselves feeling, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting everything the author is sensing. By doing so the Author has successfully written a descriptive essay. For my essay I choose to write about my passion for dance and how it is to do something you love, like a sport or hobby. Most people don't see dancing as a sport but if people would put themselves in a dancers shoes for a while and see how much time and effort we put into choreography, they could see we work just as hard as any athlete. The thing is everyone can dance but not everyone can be truly dedicated and passionate about something they hardly know about.

DeleteA descriptive essay is an essay which allows you to use your senses to describe in a more vivid, clearer, and colorful way in expressing people, places, or things. To me, a descriptive essay is like an artist painting a picture. For example, he is to use all the tools necessary down to the smallest detail to create something beautiful. From the list of topics provided, I have chosen a Home town. Nothing screams home to me than where I come from. I come from the beautiful village of Santa Rita, full of rich history and loving and caring people. Once you enter the boundaries of the village you can automatically feel the warmth the village radiates. Growing up in the village , you get to know your neighbors and the elders who still emphasis in respecting one another and its surroundings. Santa Rita is the former village of Sumay, which once was a fishing village. Its residents now reside on the mountain side gazing down on what is now called US Naval Base Guam. Santa Rita, in the late afternoon, has one of the most beautiful sunsets that you can find on the island. The sunset is a mixture of bright and soothing colors like orange, pink, yellow, and sometimes purple, that can make you feel relaxed after a long and tiring day.

DeleteA descriptive essay is about describing a subject, a scene, emotions etc. when writing a descriptive essay you have to include how you felt during a situation or what you see, also you can include what you smell or taste. I think that it is very easy to write about food because you include all those pointers. You can also talk about your emotions, how you felt. Maybe you felt angry, sad, or happy. You can also talk about places you’ve seen or visited. What you saw, people you’ve met etc. The main focus on a descriptive essay is describing everything you are writing about. The topic I will be writing about it falling in love. I’ve read that you guys have included why you guys chose that topic, but I don’t really want to state why I chose the topic I chose, but I will say that I’ve been through many ups and downs lately about that topic, and I’ve started brainstorming and outline my essay and I am enjoying it.

DeleteMore than many other types of essays, descriptive essays strive to create a deeply involved and vivid experience for the audience. Great descriptive essays achieve this affect not through statistics and facts, but by using detailed observations and descriptions. Giving the author a chance to express his or her feeling on a certain subject. As for me, I have chosen to talk about food. Not just food itself, but the types of meals Filipinos celebrate. Personally, I chose this topic because eating is one of my favorite hobbies.In my family, whenever its someones birthday or a special occasion there seems to be lots of meals pertaining to noodles and other various types of dishes of course. But I notice meals like, spaghetti and various types of pancit are devoured first. My grandmother will be in the kitchen and always cooking the noodle dishes first. I thought it was because preparing the pancit or spaghetti would take a very long while to cook. But actually, she wanted the noodle dishes first on the table because it means long sustaining health to those who eat it. Like the saying goes," You are what you eat".
