Reflection - Sept. 3 - Sec. 3

Share your thoughts regarding today's activities. (Re: Writing Process: Stage One, Exploring/Experimenting/Gathering Information, narrative essay review)

  1. During today's class we were able to have a presenter explain to us how to access the class through myreadinglab and also provided us helpful information about tutoring they provide in the English center. We also learn about stage one strategies to help us find a beginning to our essays and find a main focal point. Afterwards we review freewriting which is also referred to as "babbling in print." Finally we also review narrative essay which are rather self explanatory in that of which you write an essay narrating the events you which to share.

    1. I also thought that the presenter gave useful information for myreadinglab. It's "cool" how the english center provides tutoring AND a study area.

  2. During today's class I learned many new and interesting things. I learned that i have pay for myreadinglab, there is a place called the "writing gym", and that i am terrible at free-writing. I was so bad, that my classmates were laughing while i read.

    1. I don't think anyone can be terrible at freewriting. That's the whole purpose of the activity, to express what's on your mind, and what you had to say was pretty funny so don't worry about it; there's no right or wrong. Plus we enjoyed your short essay (:

    2. No way man, your essay was great! You weren't terrible at all! When I heard we had to pay for My Reading Lab, I was bummed out. Pretty pricey.

  3. Today's activities from the presenter about the writing lab power-point presentation by the "writing gym" volunteer was quite informational. I enjoy reading out loud to my fellow colleagues and participating in class activities. I enjoy free- writing because it is entertaining and I can speak my mind.

    3. True, it was really fun hearing about other's stories and hopefully in the future, we get to hear about one of yours too, Daniel (:

    4. Yes i enjoy reading out loud and participating in our class discussions. It really helps because, we are actualy engaging ourselves in the lesson that we learned on a certain day.

  4. You have no idea how much this lesson makes me feel so good right now. Whenever I write, my brain is like a runaway train system that could derail. Ideas come and go and may fly out of my brain. I never excelled in bringing up my ideas which makes me suffer when I formulate my ideas for topics. I never tried freewriting, but I think I like it more than the listing method that I only did. I can use these techniques together to formulate ideas better. The big 6 is also a useful technique to lay out what aspects of your topic should you concentrate on.
The writing gym is a very useful resource to keep in mind. It has tutors, internet, and comfortable learning environment. I hope I can make it to their open house if my time and schedule permits.
In conclusion, I think this is a very fruitful lesson of the fundamentals that have plagued me during my placement test. Now I feel we are going to the right track to learn how to start off a good essay.

    1. Freewriting was also not my ideal choice of writing in high school. I am glad that we were able to explore both freewriting and brainstorming!

    2. The writing gym is definitely one of the places i see myself going to aside from the library. I feel like ideas could really start to formulate when i'm in that building.

    3. The free writing was definitely a great experience and a fun time to interact with each other as a class hope it continues in such ways ^_^.

I learned many new things today. The writing process: stage one. I learned about the 4 different strategies. Free write, brainstorming clustering and gathering info. I liked the freewriting exercise because there was no wrong or right answer. You just keep writing. For brainstorming the big six questions on pg.8 really helped me. Clustering I learned to make a double bubble map. It’s more for the visual learners which I am. Lastly gathering info was more of a refresher of the last lesson. Underlining, annotations, and taking notes.

    1. I suppose the repetition of underlining, annotations, and taking notes means they have a good purpose! Like mentioned, freewriting and brainstorming is great because they (in most cases) have no wrong or write answer.

    2. A double bubble map really helps! i totally agree because i am a visual learner as well. It's more easy to understand that way. And yes, i enjoy free writes the most because, we can just share whatever comes up with our minds and there is no right or wrong answer.

  7. Today I got my course registered for myreadinglab and went to the Writing Center to learn about their services. I'm pretty interested in needing their help because I usually have problems with sentence structure. I would really appreciate all the help from them. I also learned so much about The Writing Process. It taught me that I should look up a lot of information, experiment with the information you have found, and revise and edit your essay. It was very useful lesson today!

  8. The activities that we covered today was kind of eye opening. The experiences that some students shared during our freewriting exercise were an interesting look into their lives. It's amazing how different and similar my life is compared to my classmates'. I'm glad we were able to discuss freewriting and brainstorming because I am prone to writer's block. Free writing exercises are definitely my favorite! I am interested to learn more about myreadinglab.

    2. Free writing is definitely my favorite also. I just loved how we could literally write anything that comes to our head.

    3. its basically just like writing a journal. there really isn't anything you have to follow and the best part is that you're allowed to use "uhh , uhm , idk" and everything else.

  9. I learned new things from the last class. A lady went to our class to talk about Myreadinglab and to show us how it works. She also showed us the Writing Center where we can study with friends or get tutored. Its really nice to have a place to study, I know that it will be very useful. We also learned about strategies that will help us on writing an essay. It was really fun that I got to share part of my essay in class and also to have heard what some of my classmates had written. Those strategies really helped me with my essay.

    2. I agree, it's nice to have a more private place to study and focus on school work aside from the library.. Plus whenever we need help with future papers, we know where to go (:

  10. Today, we learned how to sign up for My Reading Lab. We also got to take a short tour over to the Writing Gym. This doesn't relate to our activities, but it has something to do with the writing gym. So, yesterday I had to go around the campus to take pictures at certain places. It was for my ID180 class. Its called a UOG passport. So, the writing gym was on the list of places and I went to the gym in the field house. I asked someone just to double check if I got the right place and of course I was wrong. I thought it was the funniest thing ever. Now, I know where the writing gym is and its use for it. Later, we read about the writing process of freewriting, brainstorming, and listing. We had to freewrite about the topics that were listed in the textbooks. I really loved that activity because I didn't have to think about what to write; it easily came to my head. It was just another great day in class. I enjoy our lessons very much. (:

    1. True, we didn't really have to think but just follow the flow of words and thoughts in our heads and jot them down. Haha, I also got lost but we're new to the campus so it's a given :D

    2. The tour definitely was helpful in that we now know of a great place to hang out with tutoring and internet access as well!

  11. Last class' lesson was very helpful. I often get writer's block or have difficulty putting my thoughts into exact words so when we did the freewriting exercise, I was surprised that I had so much to say about one topic. I filled up half the paper in no time, and it seemed like the whole class really enjoyed that exercise. Freewriting helps students in writing without having to worry about grammar or stressing about what comes next. In the future, freewriting will sure come in handy.

  12. Hi guys! So, I was unfortunately unable to make our last class due to my absence off island but after reading everyone's blog entry, it really made me wish I could have made it. It seems like a lot of people shared their freewriting exercise and I wish I was able to hear them. Story telling and essay sharing has always been one of my favorite things to do in my past english classes throughout high school, and I'm sorry that I was unable to be there in class. Story telling always interests me as a person because you can learn so much about a person and see the relations you might have with them. Well aside from that, as I was reviewing the strategies on my own time, it reminded me of the easier ways in writing and how hard I can make writing become whenever I don’t use them. Writing is definitely a process and the stages make it much easier to do so.

    1. sadly, we were both unable to make it to class that day. and to be honest, story telling is actually my favorite time in any literature class. it was always so easy to understand a story no matter how complicating it was if it was just read out to you. "pound it" :)

  13. Hi guys :) I know I was absent this day you guys learned the second part of the book, but I went over it myself. The topic that was written in this side of the book was about "freewrite". Freewriting allows you to express your personal thoughts and to somewhat connect to your inner emotions to what your writing about. Freewriting also gives you the liberty to write them in many different forms. Basically, there are no limitations, no restrictions, and no laws. With freewriting, writers don't lose important thoughts rather than selecting certain details they think should be written out if it were to be written professionally. its also a really well known format when it comes to brainstorming.

    1. That's great! even if you were absent, it's good to know that you are following pace. But freewriting does express our feelings. It's better than having writer's block. we just write down whatever goes through our mind, and some times it could really be helpful.

  14. I learned a lot from today’s exercises. Such as today’s lesson about stage one in the essay writing process. It is amazing how we are encouraged to free write before we begin writing our main essay. Free writing really helps us trigger all the ideas we have in the back of our minds. Even if it is just writing down, “blah, blah, blah” it really helps us figure out the other ideas that we can incorporate to our free write. Aside from this lesson today, I actually enjoyed the orientation that was hosted by the students at the writing gym. I probably see myself visiting their room one of these days. I love how they are very nice and they welcome anyone who needs help, or just wants to study in their office. Today’s activities have benefited me once again, I am proud to say that each day in this English class, I am always learning something new.

  15. In September 3rd's class session we learned about free writing. Free writing is a method you can use to sort all your ideas before you write an essay. I was one of the "lucky ones" to present my own. My example was about movie nights my friends and I have at my house every now and then. I was never introduced into the idea of free writing before my essays but now I have a firm understanding of it. It really worked with my writing and thinking process. In the end, last class was a successful class.

  16. I learned a lot from last class. I learned about free writing and brainstorming. Free writing is a good way you can know what you want to write. There are six big questions in the brainstorming, which are who? What? Where? When? Why? How? I think it can help me gather information quickly. I was very interested in the last class.

  17. I enjoyed the presentation on the reading lab today. It was very nice to know the procedures in making the reading lab account. The process would have been difficult if we did not have our presenter today. The continuation of our lesson was a nice fresh reminder on the important six questions on brainstorming.

  18. The lesson was great! We got to see the Writing Gym, learned about My Reading Lab, and learned about free writing. My Reading Lab is expensive! Reading aloud and sharing our stories was fun, especially since I was pressured into sharing. Free writing is a great way to get ideas going especially when instead of stopping, you can write blah blah blah. I am looking forward to the next class session!
