Reflection - Nov. 19 - Run-On Sentences - Sec. 3

Visit this URL:  http://englishplus.com/grammar/00000011.htm Why should we avoid run-on sentences?

In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities.

  1. Avoiding run on sentences is very important. Although it may be correct, it makes listening and getting your message across really hard. The best thing to do is take your time and do not do run on sentences. If you do that then everyone who is listening to you will get your message clearly.

Today's class activities were interesting because of everyone's essay topics. I realized that there were a wide range of topics available that I could have chose from. The research everyone did was also great. This test was a challenge but everyone did the best they could do.

    1. And the PEA cards were cool. It reminded me of an observation at an elementary school my friend did. The class had to go around and compliment every student so they all could feel good about themselves. Seeing it in college is a good thing.

    2. I think it's really interesting to see what positive comments the class has about you!

    3. You're right about the run on sentences being correct sometimes. I tend to do the same as well but it is always best to avoid doing so.

    4. The PEA cards also reminded me of elementary. It's always great to remind people of their positive characteristics.

  2. We should avoid run on sentences because, they don’t seem appealing to the reader. Adding a comma would really help clarify your sentence. It is so much easier to read whenever a sentence is much shorter, and concise.
As for today’s class activity, it feels great knowing that we are down to our last essay from the four major essays.

    6. Ive seen some people's paper where in one long paragraph, it consists of only 2 sentences. At least we know just how bad run on sentences are!

    7. Writing these exams were somewhat stressful, I agree with everyone 100%. Other than that, I am so excited that this stressful weight has been lifted off of my shoulders and now I can focus on some of my other class work.

    9. I agree, run-on sentences aren't appealing at all.

  3. Readers should be given an opportunity to breath. State your point and/or fact then end with the proper punctuation.

Test #4 was not as difficult as the Expository. Learned significant amount of information on my topic as well!

    3. Yeah, the PEA cards definitely made my day when I read them.

  5. Run on sentences should be avoided in order to reduce a "clumpy" paper. In other words, using run on sentences can cause a paper to be very full and out of place. Although it can work at times, it can be a distraction and cause confusion.
Aside from that, today's activities were good as usual. Moreover, the PEA cards was a fun experience. It was nice to see some positive outlooks people saw in each other and that was very uplifting.

    1. That is true. Run on sentences in any type of paper bugs me. It makes the paper hard to read and eventually I just do more of a scan than to read it completely.

    2. Yes I agree, reading a continuous sentence without any proper punctuation can really cause an essay to sound stale.

    5. Makes you want to become better every single day!

    6. While it may work sometimes, it must be removed from your college writing with extreme prejudice. Instead of using run-ons; one should either break it down with simple sentences, or create compound-complex sentences.

      Delete
    7. true, it confuses and it is a bit annoying to see run on sentences

      Delete
    8. Yeah, the PEA cards was a very positive experience.

  6. I find this link on Run- On Sentences very helpful. It is still good to be reminded about it. We should avoid Run- On Sentences because shorter sentences are easier to read and easier to understand. The sentence will also sound strange if it is read without stopping.
The PEA activity last Monday was pretty fun. It was nice to compliment and show my classmates that they are unique and appreciated. It was also nice to see all the things they wrote on my paper. I did not think that people see those qualities in me. It was really encouraging and up lifting.
Today’s class activity was interesting. It was nice to hear what my other classmates wrote about and what they learned writing it.

    1. True, PEA cards are pleasant to read and also lifts our mood.

    2. You're right, the PEA activity is not just about receiving compliments but also to give them too. I can be so selfish sometimes that I lose track in all the important stuff. Just like Christmas. It about all about giving rather than receiving.

  7. Commonly, run-on sentences are used in person because the listener can understand the speaker. However, we should avoid run-on sentences when writing because it's difficult to comprehend. Run-on sentences may, in some cases, be correct, however it should not be used.
Today's class activity was great because everyone chose interesting topics. Also, it was quite informational.
I think the PEA cards are a cool way to learn how I am perceived through my classmates' eyes. I believe it's also an incredible system booster when one is feeling down. This activity took me back to elementary/middle school, which was nice.

    4. Yes, I agree! Great argumentative topics!

    5. It's cool that you chose a challenging topic definitely something I don't have the courage to do. So, big props to you. (:

    6. That's right, run-ons may work when speaking informally. However, it should be avoided not only in writing but also in formal conversations such as presentations.

      Delete
    7. Yup, I appreciate that I know what my classmates think of me

  8. Because we often speak run-on sentences, we often write some run-on sentences in our essay. Run-on sentences are a big grammar problem. When we write a college paper, we should avoid run-on sentences.
Today's class activities were interesting and meaningful because we shared our topic on argumentative essays. The PEA cards in last class was really interesting. I had class with my classmates, and they wrote down some positive words to describe me. I also described my classmates. It is a good activity to improve our friendship.

  10. Writing with run on sentences are similar to what someone from another country would sound like if they were to speak to you in their own language. Run on sentences make passages and messages a lot harder to read because it jumps onto different point that are of course, hard to catch up with. Please avoid writing with run on sentences.
About today’s session and whatnot, class was quite interesting. Argumentative essay thought me so much and really demonstrated the power of literature when getting an important message through. After our last in class essay, I finally realized just how important and powerful words could be.

    1. I agree with you on the run on sentences. It makes people jump from one topic to a different one and it tends to become confusing.

  11. Writing essays require major amount of time. The argumentative essay was easy, but the citing confuses me at time, I guess I over think about things too much. I have a habit of typing things down and in the end which is when I fix the information and construct them into actual sentences. If you do not fix run-on sentences, you can confuse yourself or the reader and they could misinterpret what you are trying to say. Today’s activities, the PEA card exercise was kind of cool. It allowed me to know exactly how my fellow classmates feel about me and made me realize some other characteristics about me that I never really bothered to explore.

    1. I agree Test #4 was easy, but of course when it comes to researching it takes time. Also, I over think things too. Don't worry we will eventually get the hang of things. (:

  12. Whenever I’m writing, I just jot down whatever thoughts I have because I don’t want to lose the point I’m making. This causes me to write in run-on sentences – a weakness which can be hard to fix. It sounds okay to us, but the readers might not understand the point we are making. So even though we have perfect structure and support, if our paragraphs are filled with run-on sentences, then our hard work will just go to waste.

I have a hard time paraphrasing. My essay includes statistics, and the sites that I found were already brief and straight to the point. Hope I don’t get accused of plagiarizing.

My PEA card consists of mostly “friendly” and “nice.” I’m pretty surprised because my close friends say I’m not very nice at all. Then there was the comment “always late but awesome.” It made me laugh because I’m known for being late all the time. Overall the comments were pleasant to read, and I greatly appreciate it. Thank you for the positive comments. I love you too Dan (:

    1. I also do the same with writing down whatever comes to mind. As i read on and on about a certain topic, I try to keep it to one specific way, but I catch myself trying to explain in multiple ways. Paraphrasing is somewhat easy, but more difficult.

  13. A run-on sentence tries to cram in several ideas into one sentence in an incoherent fashion. If one would want to properly place more than one focus idea, or main clause, you have to use proper punctuation. However, punctuation doesn't solve the problem all the time. There is a limit in how much should be implemented in a single sentence until we lose track in the central idea. Run-ons therefore have two basic weaknesses: they lack proper punctuation and that they obscure the readers ability to follow the ideas presented.

I must admit that I was expecting what I see before me in my card. I do like the compliments that I read and I think this is what people can see in me. I admit that I have that formal and sophisticated aura in me in the say I speak, how I dress, and in how I participate. However, as much as how people say how I am how I am. I don't always feel the same way. I don't believe I'm gifted. In fact, I have always thought I would never shine in the classroom. In all my years of education, not once have I felt truly recognized by anyone for any talents or gifts. Back then, I always thought people who compliment me in this fashion are actually mocking me. Every compliment felt like an act of pity. I felt more inferior when people tried to bring me up. That is because not once have I felt awarded because of my so called talent. Someone else always seems to still my spotlight away from me and left in the dark. The GATE program, the lead role of a play, NJHS, NHS, even a tiny little plague and trophy have all been within my grasp but to no avail.

But now things have changed for me. Back then I was a very vain child who kept a facade of content. Now, I have learned to not let the past take the better of me. I must look forward with optimism. Self-realization is the key to look to the future. However even now, I find it hard to be self-realized. However, this green card can be start. The Niel from my past would've cringed and faltered from this card. Now, I can embrace it.

  14. Doing run- on sentences happens to everybody when they are writing, it is really hard to avoid doing so especially if they are doing their work last minute. But sometimes it's necessarily a bad thing to write whatever your mind thinks off it could end up being really good into your essay.
Also doing the PEA activity was a really fun uplifting activity to do, seeing all our fellow students writing positive comments and then having good laugh at the end really gives off a very good impression as to how our class in general is :)..

  15. This is a continuation of my blog.

As for today's activity, it was a huge relieve that I can get this essay off my chest. This was a very arduous essay. I have done debates before in the National Forensic League, and I can tell you that arguments are not my forte. However, I felt that this particular topic is one-sided because the professionals have evidence. The opposition only have rambling.

  16. Whenever I write my papers, I tend to say what I am writing in my mind. That makes it some what of a problem because when I speak, I can go on and on. Same goes for when I type, it just goes on and on. Up to now, I definitely have to keep that in mind. As for the activity from last class, I really enjoyed it. It's great to hear positive things especially coming from your colleagues. We don't really interact as much during class sessions so that was a great way to do so.

    1. I have that problem as well. I when I am doing drafts, I biggest mistakes I tend to overlook are run-ons. The word it type form my mind sound so good until they are put into paper. Then you start to see the awkward language that is conjured up.

While it is true that we never really have the chance to closely interact, I am glad that people can still compliment each other for something.

  17. I have done the in class test again, some how it was easier to find ideas on what to write. I believe if i were to challenge myself by doing the in class test it would definitely help me on the final exit exam. In the other, Dr. Rivera has given the small green paper that we have done on Monday. Most of the things that were written about me was Quiet, but i do not mind, I appreciate the fact that my fellow classmates are being honest.

  18. I tried doing the in class test because I wanted to see how it was. It was pretty difficult but a fun challenge as well. I came up a bit short on my brainstorming ideas because I didn't know what to include. The PEA cards from last class were fun, I saw comments such as approachable, nice, and dresses nice (which I don't think I do). It was a fun activity, but I mostly copied and wrote down what others put down since I don't know much about the others on a personal level.

  19. Run-on sentences are a common problem when writing essays. This is probably because we often speak in run-on sentences, and when we write we can hear ourselves speaking. Now that know about run-on sentences, I will be more careful about it when i write.

As for today's activities, I had to do the in-class test. It was just as hard as the first time I took it. I actually had my essay done beforehand, but I woke up late and didn't have a chance to print it. So i decided to just take the in-class test.

The PEA card results were really surprising. The most surprising comments were: awesome possum, awesome sauce, swagged and smart. I never knew that I was as awesome as an animal whose natural defense against predators is playing dead, and i never thought that i could be considered tasty enough to be a condiment. I also never considered myself smart, I always thought i was kind of average with my only redeeming quality being my looks. Just kidding, its actually my great personality.
