  4. In class we learned a bunch of great things. I learned how to cite properly which is very critical in college level essays. I also learned how to use MLA format when I am citing sources. We also did some reading and every now and then stopped to talk about it. I was asked a question and answered it wrong, but that is a good thing. There is always room for improvement.

    3. That's what I felt too, but it pushed me to do better next time. Everyone makes mistakes and I agree, there's always room for improvement.

    6. I strongly agree with your last sentence. There is definitely a lot of room and time to improve. So we should take all of these new topics and reviews we are learning in this class seriously so we can do better the next time around.

  5. As for today's discussion, we can pretty much all agree that it was quite refreshing to hear about "citations." Throughout high school, I was thought the concepts and procedures about citations and with complete honesty, I sort have forgot a few rules about citing. However, the passages we read together as a class was interesting. It was nice to see the process of citing along the way and at the same time, feel the deep meaning of the stories and the morals that play along. "Listening to the Air" and all "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" are stories that also demonstrates the strength of human imagination; causing individuals to achieve the impossible.

    2. I, too, forgot a few citation rules, so it was nice to freshen my memory.

    3. Yes! i strongly agree with what you are saying. We should use our imaginations to guide us through education to help us keep thinking positive.

    4. You're absolutely right about the whole MLA citation process. I remember using it in high school, constantly. Just a helpful tip on making them, you can use this site called 'easybib.com'. It makes generating your citations much easier whenever you need to create your bibliography or works cited page.

    5. Rather than the strength's of human imagination for the story "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" I would say it was more of a fundamental demonstration of cultural shock and peer pressure

    6. Yup i agree! it was nice reviewing a familiar topic that we all learned back when we were in high school.

  6. I thought today's activities were interesting. It was nice to review citations and freshen my memory. "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong caught my undivided attention because I, as a full-blood Korean, could somewhat relate to the topic. It was nice to compare my Exercise 3 response to my classmates' because we all have different backgrounds. I am looking forward to our next class.

  7. This class is awesome and I have learned a lot within the hour. I learned that citing someones work is important, other wise you'll be plagiarizing. Citing requires the name of the author, the books name, and the book number. We could also site information from websites and other resources that we could get our hands on. Nevertheless, I will use this important lesson with most of my assignment to come, Thanks Miss Rivera!!

    2. Yes, plagiarizing other author(s) work will get you into a lot of trouble. It is very important to put in everything you read.

    3. Especially since we're in college now, everything is more serious; even using the same idea without citing can lead to trouble..

    5. Plagiarizing is definitely awful because it leads to the lack of accreditation of the rightful author.

    6. I will use what we learned from this lesson as well because I don't want to get into trouble for plagiarizing.

  8. During today's activities we reviewed the processes required to use citations and ability to properly cite works from which we pull useful information we use in our essays and paragraphs. We also went over the two stories "Listening to the Air" Guitar and The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl. Following the readings we discussed the 6 critical thinking questions in exercise 3 and related our opinions on what we would of done or interpreted from the story in the perspective of the characters. Overall it was a great class and also a well informing one in which we learned to use the uogmoodle and also learning about our class blogsite.

  9. Learned a lot from the lesson and had fun reading with all my classmates. Citations would be very important if I needed to address an author. As well as include the book I read and the page number. That way I wouldn't be plagiarizing other author(s) work. And if I forget where to find the page. I can just look at my citation. Can't wait for next class.

  12. Today's activities were very useful because it gave me more information about our descriptive essay. I also learned about how to work cite. It was something different that I am definitely going to need a little help to adjust to. Also, I like how a number is assigned to us because it gives everyone an equal share in participation. It helps me become more comfortable with the class. When I listen to the answers that other students provide, it makes me look at the lesson in a different perspective.

    5. Yes, I strongly agree about the whole class participation part you said. I feel that it gives us all a better understanding of the readings when we all communicate and put our own inputs and ideas whenever we respond to the questions. Sharing our ideas will definitely bring us all together as a class and colleagues.

    6. I really like how the class participates in our group discussions as well. We all learn from each other's point of views, and it helps us out whenever we are lost in a certain topic or question.

  13. Today's activities were quite interesting. The essays we read today were very different but the essay I found most appealing to myself would be, "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong. I found her essay to be thoroughly written with good examples and the use of visual imagery. Her essay was the most appealing for me because I can see where she’s coming from in my personal point of view. I understand the difference between having to deal with cultural disputes between myself and society. The American society is completely different within my cultural background but unlike Wong, I find my culture to be a representation of who I am and where I come from. In other words, I find pride in my culture more than the American cultural, unlike Wong. Although we both have different understandings, I know how it feels to live on the mainland and be influenced by diverse cultures that attract us due to either food, or festivities. So to conclude today's activities, I enjoyed our discussions and readings upon the essays we talked about in class today. All in all, it was a very appealing class day.

  14. From reading aloud essays written by fellow students, answering questions and citing the text, I found today's lesson to be very helpful. Although I still haven’t memorized citing in MLA format, which is necessary for future essays, I'm certain we'll be doing more activities on it. I was also designated to answer a question on the essay “The Struggle to be an All-American Girl” but ended up getting it wrong. Next time, I’ll make sure to reread the text again.

  16. In today's activities I reviewed on a topic that we are all familiar with. How to work cite the proper way in the college level. Although, I still think I need more practice on the college level citing. We read a student based essay to get an idea about providing credit for their citations."Listening to the air guitar" (12th ed: 96)
We also read an essay that was underlined and annotated. "How to be an American girl" (12th ed: 97) This passage was an inspiring one because, it reminds us not to forget where we came from even if we are out in the world experiencing other diverse cultures.

    2. Yes, plagiarism and citations are familiar topics. I have done MLA citations in high school, but my work never seems to impress teachers. But that's why we are here to refresh and reinforce our skills for college.

  17. Today's lesson was great and interesting. We did some activities that really helped me understand the lesson which was Citation and writing in MLA format. It was also good to be reminded of what I learned from highschool. We read stories like "Listening to the Air'" and " The Struggle to be an All American Girl" which was pretty interesting because I even learned a life lesson. The story taught me that even if I live in a different country, I should never forget my roots. I should always be proud and treasure where I came from. I am learning a lot of things in this class and I am excited to learn more. I know that all the things I am learning in this class will be really helpful through out college.

    1. We all need good reminders of what we learn from high school. We aren't computers that can save files in our brains. People forget things, even the more important things. I know I forgot things that pop right back to me when taking college classes.

  18. Today i learned many new things. I learned how to properly cite your references. I learned MLA. We also read some stories. "sexist men vs. victims", "Listening to the air guitar." and the struggle to be an all american girl. although the classroom was kind of hot, i still enjoyed it.

  19. Today's lesson was interesting, I learned a lot. Citations are important if you want to avoid plagiarism. Now that I know how to cite the work of other people, I don't have to worry about going to jail for stealing. (Plagiarism is stealing, and stealing is not cool.) The air guitar concert we had today was amazing. Today's lesson was great, I can't wait for the next one.

  20. Today is a fruitful experience. We were able to cover proper MLA citing, which has been the bane of my high school endeavors. I do not want to repeat the same mistakes again here in college. The reading and writing exercises are helpful for my comprehension skills, which is lacking. The topic of cultural identity covered in "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" reminds me of my own cultural dilemma as a Filipino-American born and raised here. However unlike Wong, I have hope that I can eventually reconcile with my own heritage in order for me to be a wholesome American boy.
