ReplyDeleteVery well. It works, I am happy. Requesting coffee.
DeleteToday has been very helpful and serves as a reminder that citing sources is very important. Going over the different types of citation weather it be quoting, paraphrasing or even restating (summarized). All of these techniques are important in writing or publishing because of copyright laws. You always want to give credit where credit is due.
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty easy for me to grasp the whole plagiarizing subject and how to resolve it. Quoting, paraphrasing, annotating, and underlining still confuse me to a point.
Deletetoday was an interesting day today for me in class, it refreshed my mind on descriptive writing and writing in MLA format. today was a good day. and the performance was pretty cool.
DeleteI agree with you. These techniques are important for writing essays. To tell the truth it was the first time to learn the techniques because I had LOTE classes for English in high school.
Deletewhat we learned today such as MLA and APA was really helpful for me too. I have to keep them in my mind in order to tell readers what kind of sources I used for my essay.
DeleteI heard about MLA format before but I did not know how to use it. This lesson was very helpful.
DeleteI've done papers using both MLA and APA citing formats and it really does get easier after awhile!
DeleteToday’s activities were mainly about citations and essays. We read a couple of small essays and pointed out the citations stated. I learned more about how to cite and how to create bibliographies. In addition we read "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl," by Elizabeth Wong. It was an interesting story about a girl assimilating into the American culture and in result losing her Chinese identity. After discussing the story, we touched up on descriptive essays. We basically read what descriptive essays could be about; as well as some tips that could help improve our writing. I plan to implement what we learned today to our essay due on October 1st.
ReplyDeleteThe class today will help me as well in the righting process for the descriptive essay that is due on the 1st of October. I felt that I did not relate to the second essay by Elizabeth Wong as much as I would like to.
DeleteI learned more on how to cite as well. "the struggle to Be an All-American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong, definitely a great that I think a lot of people may relate to.
Delete"The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" was interesting and touching for me too. I understand how she has felt being in two different cultures in that story because I have been in a similar situation that she has gone through.
DeleteIt was a great reminder on how to properly cite different resources today. What also helped was the different examples of how to cite within the text and at the end.
DeleteToday’s class we accomplished quite a bit of activities. From taking a class photo, to completing text work as well as descriptive writing review. We read “listening to the Air Guitar” by John (Fire) Lame Deer and “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” By Elizabeth Wong. Both stories were amazing and a great example from what we learned in class today.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The stories are amazing. We should read more stories like that.
Deletei agree to. makes me happy that i have my chamorro class after this, help me get back to my roots.
DeleteI agree with you. We have done a lot of things in class today. Those three stories were great and helpful for us to learn about how to write essays. My most favorite story was "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girls".
DeleteThe photo taking portion of class was a great way to interact with one an other!
DeleteI agree with what you have to say about the stories. They are both very interesting stories and they really get you thinking.
DeleteKerr, Eugene S. - August 27, 2014 Blog
ReplyDeleteFirst time, in my entire life, to make a blog. Not too keen on sharing thoughts about the class events and lectures of the day, but past experiences allow me to carry on with the objective. With a consolation of myself mentally complaining to myself while I type out this blog. The lecture today seemed a tad bit too quiet when it came to the peers who were reading out loud from the book. I could barely hear them. Might have to invest in a megaphone for the class, as well as coffee vending machine. This is also the first time in my college life that I started falling asleep, which explains my supposed caffeine addiction.
By the by, if anyone is still missing the text book for this class then feel free to notify me for a free PDF copy. Now then, back to staring at this noisy machine next to the wall.

ReplyDeleteToday in class we went through many activities. Before starting class we took a group photo for our class blog, and then we reviewed the difference between a summary and a reaction. Following the activity, we read essays that contained annotations, and examples of an MLA format for an essay. The first essay we read was called “Listening to the Air” Guitar. The second essay that we read is called “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl.” Lastly, Ms. Rivera reviewed our assignment that is due on October 1st 2014, which is the descriptive essay.
I think we all learned something from today's class. I already have an idea on what I might want to write about for the descriptive essay. good luck on yours.
DeleteToday’s activities were more interesting than usual. We read articles that had very interesting and insightful topics. The article, The Struggle of an All-American Girl, really opened my eyes to be more patriotic and to be proud of the culture that I am from. Miss Rivera’s explanation of the first essay, The Descriptive Essay, was very informative and helpful. I would have to say that the highlight of this class period was the “exciting” live concert we had for about one minute; we should probably have that more often to keep the class awake and exciting. Overall, I think that today’s class period was filled with helpful and interesting events.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with your thoughts about the story "All-American Girl" because when you said that it opened your eyes to being patriotic and proud of your culture I felt the same way after reading it.
DeleteI agree that the information on descriptive paragraphs were helpful. I also thought our class concert was entertaining and it does keep the class awake and exciting.
DeleteToday was like a reminder of work cited for the MLA format. I do need to remember the idea of writing an essay. Of course everyone must avoid plagiarism. The writer using quotations, writing the author's name, page number, and the source of the book or website used for an essay. It is always helpful for reminders or a memory refresh to these techniques.
ReplyDeleteThis was very interesting class for me today too. This will be the first time using the MLA format.
DeleteCiting is pretty easy and respectful. I'll have to practice by writing up an essay and citing at least one sentence per paragraph.
Deleteyea i agree, today was like a refresher for me, on providing work cited pages and to always avoid plagiarism.
DeleteToday's lesson was very important to me. Plagiarizing is not good. if I did not learn about citation today. I might plagiarize someone's essay without knowing it.
DeleteToday consists of reading from our class book pointing out what was cited on the essay. The essays we read were very interesting. The one that interested me the most was the one about her culture because children nowadays do not care for their culture. We are currently writing blogs and this is my first time writing one. I hope I get the hang of writing blogs.
ReplyDeleteIt's my first time writing a blog too. I'm pretty sure we'll get used to this over time.
Deletesame here, first time writing a blog, seems interesting, hopefully we'll all get used to it.
DeleteI can agree that kids nowadays do not care for their culture. I feel that what's being exposed in the media is one of the main reasons.
Deletei understand what it means to forget your own culture. i am the only one of my siblings who is interested in our Chamorro heritage, language, and traditions.
DeleteSame here, I need to get used it. sometimes I feel culture barriers between my friends and me because my main culture is Japanese and they are from different cultures.
DeleteI agree with your statement, kids nowadays do not care about the culture they come from and that is really sad beacuase our culture is slowly fading away.
DeleteI agree too. Kids today don't care about the culture they have. It's sad to see kids unaware of their culture. Kids would even say my culture is pop culture. Hopefully we can make a change with our youth and make the world a better place.
DeleteIn today’s English 100 class, we all experienced a very interesting day of learning. Not only did we go over the text but we were blessed with a live concert by one of our classmates, Mark Blas. We discussed kinds of supporting for Text-Based Writing and Descriptive Essays. We Read a couple of stories that made the Descriptive Essay more clear to our minds and it allowed us to better understand what a descriptive essay is. The one story that we read that had my attention was “Listening to the Air’ Guitar by Joseph Ponca because the ending of the story was very shocking and disheartening. The class today was very interesting and somewhat funny.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about how "Listening to the Air Guitar" was "disheartening". It is pretty sad that we don't truly embrace nature like how people used to.
DeleteToday’s lessons and activities are to teach us about citations, and giving credit where credit is due. Also when doing a descriptive essay, as the writer, explain what you have felt, seen, or heard in your story. When citing you need to add the authors name and what book or site the information was from. On one on the activities we discussed how to play an air guitar with just motion and vocal signs. Another activity that we did today was to take a group photo of the class and then re-take the photo because I look good in a camera.
ReplyDeleteyes, i strongly agree on always citing our work, and giving the authors credit for the work they've provided for us.
DeleteToday’s class was really interesting. I’ve learned that citing sources is very helpful. The story we’ve read today was also interesting. It talks about how men think differently about women and how they think women are just “life of affection” and men are “earning a living” but I think otherwise. Women are more than that. After the stories we’ve read we got onto the computers and read about the four types of essays which I think are really helpful for me.
ReplyDeleteI thought the stories we read were interesting. Also, citing sources are important or else you can get in trouble for plagiarism.
DeleteI agree with your statement, women are definitely more than a pretty head attached to a pretty body. I just wish that todays generations would stop looking at the surface but whats really underneath.
DeleteToday’s activity was a good review of citations, annotating, summarizing, writing a reaction, and writing a descriptive essay. The essay, “Sexist Men as Victims” by Jackie Malone, was an interesting opinionated short essay. I feel that it is somewhat true, but even a handful of women are probably the same. The author, Elizabeth Wong, who wrote “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl”, seemed to come off ungrateful to me. I understand how she felt out of place, but she did not have to belittle her mom.
ReplyDeleteI like your way of thinking. Yes, we shouldn't generalize the male population as sexiest because there are probably women who fit the characteristics mentioned in that exert. As for the piece by Elizabeth Wong I did sense her negativity towards her culture. I thought I was the only one who saw it that way.
DeleteI agree, it has been great reviewing what citations, annotating, summerizing.... etc...and their meaning beacuse a few days ago i had no idea what they ment or how to use them.
DeleteI'm glad I wasn't the only one that felt that way about the essay, "Sexiest Men as Victims". I also believe that article can go both ways and not just for guys.
DeleteI have read two essays, Listening to the Air and The struggle to be an All-American, today. They were so interesting, but sometimes it was hard to understand. Because I am still learning English. I sympathy with Wong about her transformation. I grew up in Japan and I moved to Guam three years ago. When I came here I could not speak English at all. I did not even understand what people were speaking. I felt that the difference between Japanese and American culture. It was really hard to become familiar with American culture. Benjamin T. Rouse
ReplyDeleteI think over time you will adapt to the American culture, but don't feel discouraged. You will do great.
DeleteIt was hard for me to understand and follow what we were talking and reading about in class too. I need to work on my English even harder in order to catch up with my classmates.
DeleteIsn't it interesting how we as human beings, have so much in common and yet it makes a huge difference depending on which side of the world we came from. I love Japan and its culture and I admire how far you've come from not knowing English up to now. American culture isn't as complicated and I hope you feel at home here on Guam.
DeleteJust keep your head up and keep moving forward and eventually you will reach your goal!
DeleteIt will take time to adjust to the new environment you live in now. You have to strive forward and be dedicated to learning new things.
DeleteWhen we read "The struggle to Be an All-American Girl" together, I kind of knew how she has gone through. I speak, write, and read in Japanese because I grew up in Japan. I have been forced to learn English since I moved to Guam with my family. It is really hard to learn or study other cultures such as languages. I have been struggling with American culture. I hope I will be able to speak English well in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think we’re all going to relate to a story, for you, it was that one. the most important thing to remember is to never lose who you and stay motivated. keep up the hard work and you’ll be speaking explicit english in no time.
DeleteIn class we’ve discussed the difference between a summary and reaction. We concluded that a summary would mostly consist of information and a reaction would consist more of opinion(s). Reading the essay examples I felt we gained in site on the different authors and their perspectives on their topics. For instance the paragraph written by Elizabeth Wong “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” it not only reflected on her take on her heritage but gave us an idea of how it would be, being in her shoes. It made me aware of how different cultures can differ from each other and that it’s important to take into consideration how we are around people of different ethnicities.
ReplyDeletei am glad we learned what the difference was between a conclusion and a reaction was. for the longest time i thought they were the same thing.

DeleteToday we learned quite a handful of useful information in class. We reviewed a little about we had learned from last class. We also learned how to cite information we would get from other text. The essays we read were very helpful in showing us how to cite.
ReplyDeleteToday was full of useful information. I agree about how the essays were really helpful.
DeleteThe things we reviewed in class today were very helpful. We went over how to properly cite work and how to write a descriptive essay. If using another persons work, its very important to cite the author. Otherwise, you'd be plagiarizing, and could get into a heap load of trouble. Other than that, we read great examples of how a descriptive essay should be, looked at cited work, took multiple group photos, and even had a little performance which was very entertaining.
ReplyDeleteIt is very important to make sure you cite the work you quote from because plagiarism is a very serious offense. It was entertaining to see an air guitar solo.
DeleteI think we all learned something new today. If not new then today’s lesson gave us a perspicuous explanation of how to cite the author.
DeleteIt is important to cite your work to avoid plagiarism. You should give your gratitude to the sources you use in your essay.
DeleteYes the performance was very entertaining. I also agree that plagiarism is a very serious thing. We should all be vigilant in preventing plagiarism.

ReplyDeleteToday in my English 100 class we discussed the main key aspects of descriptive essays and the ML Format. The ML Format is very new to me I never learned that in my old school so i hope i can learn more about it here.
ReplyDeleteToday was about free writing and knowing about recursive. It felt kinda good to write what's ever in your mind. There were some helpful tips that I was not familiar with. The recursive is one, when you read back and forth, so you can find what's important in the subject. Answering the six questions: who, what, when, why, where, and how, helps keep track what's important. Finally the listing, it is most likely to be the ones you underlined, and then you circle what you think matters.
ReplyDeleteI like free writing. It's easy for me to just write what's on my mind. Recursive is helpful to use to find the importance in the subject.
DeleteWe went over how to cite our work. To give the proper credit from the information you used. You never want to be accused of plagiarism. From writing the author's name, using quotations, the source of the book or website used for an essay, and the page number.
